Aion vs WoW

September 8th, 2009

Hello all,

since that topic is coming up all the time i thought i add some of my experience also. I haven’t played Aion that much yet nor did i have played CA (Chinese Aion) but i think i have because of reviews and friends a quite nice overview about Aion and the game.

So here it comes, you can read about the topic literally everywhere:

But why is that?

Well the first reason people are doing that kind of compare is because they think WoW is THE mmorpg. They think WoW has invented the MMORPG, it was a totally new game with so much thinks that no one have ever seen in a game before.

Of cause those people who played games before WoW did notice that MMORPG is around way longer then Blizzard and of cause way longer then WoW. They also do know that WoW is actually just a “clone” from Everquest and as such had no serious improvements.

But why is WoW then so successful etc?

Blizzard has quite a nice way in promoting there games, they had the money they had the chance to learn from previous mistakes other MMORPGS did and they didn’t had to do that kind of mistakes again which saves money. They also wanted to create a game that is made for the “biggest” group of actual players. So what they did is to create a game that even runs on your 10 years old PC. They did a nice job promoting it to the public. (I life in Germany and i can not remember when i have last time seen ANY MMORPG on the TV… but i remind WoW :p). When WoW has started they made enough contend for hardcore farmers / raiders and for those casual players. They added stuff like “rest xp” so people who log 1 time a week do not fall behind. The way to get to max level is really easy and everyone was able to see every kind of instance/dungeon before a new expansion comes out. They actually nerved periodically all the contend, “abused” those high end raiding guild with there world first to test there non working encounters and made them after 1 month or something that weak that even people with no “skill” not the proper equip etc can kill them. That way everyone is more or less happy, over the last month and years more and more casual gamers came and more and more hardcore players left the servers. The lack of competition and the bad pvp system makes it no more interesting for those people seeking for serious challenges.

But look at the subscriber numbers!

Yeah when you look at them its quite impressive. But what does that actually mean? For me it only means that WoW is made for the normal “casual” player and “kids”. WoW was and is the only game parents are giving there kids to play and pay for it. So it is actually not a big surprise that there are so many people playing the game. Also because of the promotion and all those talking at school make kids go for it. I remember when the game came out and i was still at some kind of “school” where every 2. person in every class was talking and playing about that game :D .

Okay so what is about the Aion vs WoW thingy?

Well Aion is no WoW its not WoW with wings it is not a “clone” it is not similar its nothing compared to WoW unless you want to count in that you have to kill some kind of “mobs” in both games and that you can do “quests” :>.

Also the players who are playing each game are different, Aion is WAY MORE PvP then WoW ever was or ever will be. Aion is made around PvP where WoW is made for PvE.

So there is a huge difference just around the key concept of the games.
